How to Purify Pond Water?

How to Purify Pond Water?

Ponds make for beautiful and relaxing natural displays. They enrich our surroundings by enhancing their beauty.

Plus, they are also important for the survival of many species that reside inside of them. In addition, they provide a haven to native and endangered species and give a source of drinkable water for humans.

However, maintaining water purity inside a pond can be a bit tricky. Algae can quickly infest your pond. In addition, decaying plant matter leaves a sludge at the bottom of the pond.

So, if you wish to make it healthy for drinking, the pond water must be cleansed and purified regularly. It takes time and effort but is very worth it in the end. Cleaning up pond water will prolong the lives of the species residing in them and promote a healthy ecosystem for people drinking it.

Methods to Purify Pond Water

Here are a few steps that you can follow when purifying your pond water:

Add Hydrogen Peroxide for Quick Water Treatment

A very green and gross pond can also be cleared using hydrogen peroxide. It clears up the algae faster. For every 1000 gallons of water, you can add 0.5L of hydrogen peroxide. It should be noted that the hydrogen peroxide needs to get diluted first.

The results differ according to the size and type of pond. The amount of hydrogen peroxide can be adjusted in relation to the size of the pond and how dirty it is. However, caution needs to be taken to avoid adding an excessive amount since it can damage fish and plants.

Add Chemical Tablets For Treating Pond Water

Adding purification tablets is probably one of the easiest ways to purify your pond. You can drop these chemical tablets in the container carrying pond water and let them sit for almost thirty minutes. It will eventually kill pathogens and will get you healthy drinking water.

These tablets help eliminate all the contaminating substances such as viruses, bacteria, and different parasites from water. But, you have to make sure the quantity of these drops is neither less nor too much.

Some standard tablets that are suitable enough for treating pond water for drinking are chlorine, iodine, etc., so an effective chemical tablet goes a long way in making maintaining pond water clean and hassle-free.

For Example, if you are using tincture iodine as a tablet, add two drops. It will be enough to purify one quart of clear water. But, if you come across unclear water, then adding ten drops would be wiser. Let the solution sit for thirty minutes, and here you go! Store the water in a bottle and start drinking.

Water Filtration

Water filtration is the most common and recognized way to purify pond water for drinking purposes. But, the question is, how do they work?

Filtration treatment contains some porous material, such as activated carbon. Its job is to absorb all the contaminants present in the water.

But, as the water drains out from the filtration system, all the impurities get stuck to that activated carbon. And, pure water comes out, ready to be used for drinking. You can also use an automatic filtration appliance at your home to make things easy and comfortable.

Using Ultraviolet Rays for Water Purification

One of the ways to kill micrograms in water is to take advantage of ultraviolet rays. It acts as a disinfectant and destroys pathogens. It’s basically a purification system that releases more Ultraviolet light than the sun.

The ultraviolet light is trapped in a chamber and allows water to pass through it; its radiation eliminates the contaminating organisms at once.

It proves to be effective in destroying various viruses like Hepatitis and Norovirus.

So, instead of using chemicals to purify water, you have the advantage of using natural sources as well.

Must you have heard about distillation? If not, let me explain some basic facts about how to use distillation to purify pond water for drinking.

It’s the process in which condensed moisture is gathered from evaporated steam and turns out to be the most suitable way of purifying water.

The fact is, you won’t need extra machinery for this one. All you need to have is a water container, heat source, and of course a vapor tube. After collecting all the necessary tools, follow these steps;

  • Heat the water till it boils
  • Try to force the evaporation by using the tube
  • At last, collect the clean water into a container

As a matter of fact, pollutants don’t settle in vapor form. So it will make you more than sure that the water you have collected is pure and healthy for drinking.

Another alternative is to have readymade distillation units at your homes. These units can distill 4 gallons of water as per day requirement, which is more than enough for all the family members of a household to drink.

The most conventional and oldest method of water purification, fortunately still in use, is the boiling method. It’s used all over the globe by many people who can’t afford the automatic appliance or can’t manage to go for other methods.

When you boil the water, its excessive heat will somehow destroy all the biological contaminants. Hence, it makes it ideal for healthy drinking.

In case your water is cloudy, make sure to filter the larger sediments first. You can do that by using clean cloth or coffee filters. After that, start heating the water until the bubbles come out of it.

Keep it boiling for one to three minutes, and then set it aside to cool. Cover the container to avoid any bacteria or microbes coming into your boiled water. However, boiled water tastes quiet, but it’s the easiest and quickest method that will provide you with a healthy source of drinking water.

Purify Pond Water by Using Bleach or Chlorine

People started associating chlorine with purifying swimming pools after hearing about chlorine as a purification agent. But, guess what? It’s not always the case. It can also be helpful in purifying pond water for drinking if used in a moderate amount.

It does its job by killing bacteria and viruses residing inside the pond water, making it suitable for drinking. Indeed, choline is also used at the municipal level in order to make the water clean for the whole city.

On the other hand, bleach is also being used for water purification since it’s equivalent to chlorine. It holds four to six percent of concentration and appears to be a perfect fit for disinfecting water for drinking.

Wrapping Up

Ponds are an essential part of our ecosystem. They not only add aesthetic value to the environment, provide a home to aquatic life but also give us a source of drinkable water. All you have to do is follow certain steps and water filtration treatments to make it possible.

The techniques explained above  go a long way in maintaining the purity of water and ensuring that the water remains fit to be used for drinking.

So, what are you waiting for? Please make the most out of ponds when you have a chance. Using your skills and, start surfing filtration treatments to make it pure for drinking.
