How to Reduce Generator Noise

While generators are excellent for charging appliances and emergency uses, people dislike them for their high noise levels.

Generator quiet boxes are a fantastic way to reduce the generator noise, but they add more weight. Plus, you can’t carry them everywhere with you on your camping trips.

If you’re planning to take your generator on a camping trip or wish to work on a project in your garage or lawn, you need to take some measures to reduce the high levels of generator noise. Otherwise, the noise will create a nuisance during your DIY projects or camping trips. 

This article mentions numerous ways to reduce generator noise. 

Keep the Generator at Some Distance

One of the simplest ways to reduce loud noise levels is by increasing the distance between the generator and yourself.

Moving the generator further away will help you spread the sound energy, reducing the acoustic intensity. 

When you double the distance between you and the generator, it creates a 6dB noise reduction. But it’s only applicable in large spaces.

But when you go camping, you usually do not have a vast space to keep the generator away. Keep a long extension wire with you to create a significant distance between you and the generator. If this isn’t applicable, you can use other methods to quiet down the generator. 

Keep the Exhaust Pipe in a Vertical Position 

Most manufacturers design generators with an exhaust pipe that horizontally connects to the generator. Changing the position of the exhaust pipe to make it vertical helps reduce the noise levels.

The primary reason for a lower sound level is that the sound comes toward you when the pipe is placed horizontally. But when you change the position by placing the exhaust pipe vertically, it reduces the noise as sound isn’t directed towards you.

Use Padding Beneath the Generator

If you’re trying to figure out how to lower the noise levels, you must inspect the surface on which you place the generator.

Once you decide where to keep your generator, you can keep rubber padding beneath it. This creates a significant difference as the ground beneath the generator is softer.

Softer surfaces such as rubber padding efficiently reduce vibration between the generator and its resting surface. This reduces the noise levels.

You must avoid placing the generator on hard surfaces as it amplifies the noise. Avoid surfaces such as wood, asphalt, concrete, etc.

If you go camping, your only option is dirt or grass. They both work well to reduce the generator noise as they dampen and absorb the sound coming from a rumbling generator. 

Sometimes you may not have a soft surface to place your generator. You can purchase anti-vibration mats or rubber padding for this scenario.

These mats help soften the sound that is produced due to vibration. Place the mat underneath the generator to quiet it down. 

Use Sound Deflectors

Once you place the generator on a soft surface at some distance away from you, it will reduce the noise levels. If you want to make it even quieter, use sound deflectors for the generator.

Using sound deflectors isn’t challenging as you only require four sheets of plywood and one sheet of non-flammable material. In addition, you can use drywall as it’s fire-resistant. 

Ensure that the sheets measure about 3 to 4 feet tall and 4 to 5 feet wide. You can use these sheets to cover every angle of the generator.

You must use the drywall sheet on the generator’s side near the exhaust pipe as you wouldn’t want the deflector to catch fire.

If you correctly place the pieces of wooden sheets around the generator, it creates space for airflow and deflects the sound waves onto the surface. This is an effective way to lower the sound coming from your generator without affecting its performance. 

Reduce the Vibration in Your Generator’s Engine Housing

The generator produces a lot of noise due to vibration. If you want to reduce the sound produced by vibration, you need to add a sound-absorbing or dampening material to your generator’s engine housing. 

Inspect the generator’s engine. You’ll find screws that secure the engine to a frame.

Your generator may also have rubber washers placed between the frame and the screws. But you can add more rubber washers to reduce noise levels. 

However, you will have to replace the small bolts with longer ones to adjust more washers. 

Add a Muffler 

Mufflers can efficiently reduce the noise levels of a vehicle. Similarly, they’re great for reducing the noise output of generators.

For most generators, motorcycle mufflers work best. First, however, you have to make a custom exhaust pipe system for it. 

Mufflers have two holes, one on the top and the second at the bottom. You can reduce the noise levels by creating an extra hole.

Moreover, you can have a custom muffler built for your generator. Custom mufflers are better for soundproofing the generator. 

Use an Acoustic Enclosure Box

Using acoustic enclosure boxes is similar to using sheets to deflect sound. You can build a baffle box or an acoustic enclosure box for the generator. The primary idea behind this technique is to contain the sound waves within the box. 

The hard surfaces of the enclosure box limit the sound transmission by reflecting the sound waves. As a result, it drastically lowers the noise produced by rumbling generators.

Moreover, a baffle box or an acoustic enclosure box is compact to take with you on your camping trips.

If the acoustic box does not work well, you can use additional acoustic fencing to quiet down the generator further. Temporary acoustic fencing works well for outdoor events and camping.

However, you’d need larger installations and custom-built acoustic screens for larger generators.
